The Scrum Master helps teams plan, execute, and track their work using agile frameworks and practices, agile principles, and an agile mindset. They are experienced in Scrum and Kanban, and are familiar with at least one scaled agile framework. They coach their teams in the use of these frameworks.


Responsibilities:

Facilitates their teams through all agile events such as iteration planning, reviews and retrospectives, and program increment (PI) planning. Creates working agreements, definition of ready, and definition of done. Follows agile chapter guidelines such as the definition of an established team, elements of team excellence and PI planning guidance.

Is experienced in implementing metrics to gauge team performance (e.g., burn-up, burndown, lead/cycle times, velocity trends, cumulative flow diagrams). Helps the teams forecast their work, review performance, and take necessary action to align it with the forecast.

Assists product owners and teams in aligning product roadmaps and PI plans, product backlogs, and sprint backlogs. Builds awareness of, and supports agile chapter guidelines for work items.

Uses tools such as Feature Kanban to manage feature lifecycle and drive backlog management; ensures that the backlog meets exit criteria for each stage. Guides the teams in meeting the criteria where necessary.

Participates with their teams to identify, analyze, and resolve impediments, risks, and dependencies. Collaborates with team members to discuss dependencies with producing teams, and confirm that there is a plan for their fulfillment. Facilitates teams in identifying, analyzing, and determining how to address risks (resolve/own/accept/mitigate). Escalates unaddressed impediments, risks, and dependencies.

Ensures that all team members are knowledgeable about their product's users, the business process and context, high level technical architecture, and the agile framework used by the team. Works with team members and external stakeholders to improve where needed.

Fosters an environment where team members feel safe and appreciated, and are working at a sustainable pace. Uses the concepts of servant leadership in supporting their teams.

Celebrates instances of effective teamwork and collaboration. Notices when relationships and collaboration can be improved and develops plans for such improvement. Identifies instances where team is impacted by undue outside interference; works with product owners and chapter leads to address.

Contributes to the advancement of the Agile Chapter by leading and participating in chapter related activities (e.g., facilitating innovation days, and updating artifacts published by the chapter such as the agile playbook). Teaches agile classes independently or in partnership with senior scrum masters or agile coaches.

Qualifications:

  • 4 + years of enterprise experience working in a complex Agile environment with multiple teams, frameworks, and dependencies
  • 2 + years of experience as a Scrum Master working with multiple teams in a complex environment
  • Experience working in scaling Agile environment using SAFe or similar frameworks
  • Experience working with technical enablement teams; platform, DevSecOps
  • Experience working with Agile tools e.g. Jira, Rally, ADO, VersionOne, etc.
  • Exposure to modern engineering practices like UTDD, ATDD, Test Automation CI/CD, etc.

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Possess an agile mindset, and familiarity with the values and principles of the agile manifesto
  • Knowledge of agile frameworks such as Scrum and Kanban; familiarity with a scaled agile environment and PI planning.
  • Experience with agile metrics such as burn-up, burn-down, lead/cycle time, velocity charts, cumulative flow diagrams.
  • Ability to facilitate and coach teams.
  • Build relationships and network with other product and shared services teams in support of dependency management and impediment removal.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in problem solving skills such as active listening, analysis, synthesis, root-cause determination, what-if thinking, decision making.
  • Ability to review and follow agile chapter guidance (e.g., definition of established, elements of team excellence, PI planning guidance).
  • Set up and configure agile tools in support of teams; may seek assistance from chapter members who are tool experts.
  • Ability to co-create and co-deliver training content.
  • Desire to learn. Brings high energy and positive outlook.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Certification in CSM / PSM / CSPO / PSPO or similar preferred

The hiring range for this position is $97,500 to $159,400. The final salary offer will vary based on geographic location, individual education, skills, and experience.
