We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to help develop guidelines on assessing risks of industrial robotic and automation systems, and develop risk mitigation and loss prevention methodologies.
Responsibilities:
The postdoctoral researcher will join the equipment risk and reliability team of FM Global Research in Norwood, MA, as early as September 1, 2023. The researcher will be closely working with and under the general guidance of an FM Global advisor and, possibly, external co-advisor(s). The researcher is expected to bring up-to-date initiatives/ideas and solid experience to reinforce targeted research activities at FM Global. He or She will
- Develop, operate, maintain, and trouble-shoot the robotic testing setups, equipment, and software.
- Develop test cases through, for example, errors injections into the control software, to produce simulated faulty conditions. Evaluate fault tolerant capabilities of automation/robotic systems.
- Evaluate available remote connected services that use sensor data for robotic condition monitoring, diagnostics, and help optimize preventive or condition-based maintenance.
- Evaluate risk rooted in the application integration process vs. from traditional aspects in design, operation, maintenance, and safety devices/systems.
- Develop general robotic risk assessment and mitigation methodologies and standard.
- Propose new research topics/projects and collaboration opportunities, serving as a bridge between FM Global and external research communities.
This position is for a limited term of up to three years, renewable each year. This position will be based out of our FM Global Office located in Norwood MA, USA. The role is typically focused on performing publishable work as part of a strategic research program under the guidance of a program manager or other senior research staff member(s).
Qualifications:
- The candidate should have recently graduated with a doctoral degree, in the field of mechatronics/robotic engineering, industrial/system engineering, mechanical, or electrical engineering.
- Strong hands-on knowledge and experience in design of experiments and test setups, operating and trouble-shooting robotic systems including mechanical, electrical, sensing/instrumentation, and control/software components or systems.
- Significant knowledge in robotics kinematics, dynamics, motion planning, and control.
- Significant knowledge and programing experience in ROS and Ubuntu operating systems.
- Significant knowledge of camera vision and motion/position sensing.
- Knowledge and experience in data modeling/analytics for fault detection and diagnostics.
- Strong accountability, through strength in attention to details, problem-solving, result delivery, and sufficient project management skills.
- Strong self-driven work ethics and work under general advisory but not close supervision.
- Strong collaboration and team working spirit, through competent verbal and written communication, as well as presentation skills, with colleagues, advisors, customers, collaborators, and technology providers/vendors.
The hiring range for this position dependent on final grade and title is $85,800 to $123,300 USD. The final salary offer will vary based on geographic location, individual education, skills, and experience.
