Do you know how a power plant or black liquor recovery boiler operates or why a transformer malfunctions? Can you explain high cycle fatigue, flow associated corrosion? Have you ever seen a turbine generator break down, a lube oil fire or witnessed a steam turbine fail?  Would you like to?

Boiler & machinery consultant engineers will interact with FM Global clients primarily in the Chemical, Power Generation, Forest Products-Pulp & Paper, Mining, Molten Materials, and similar industries. Experienced engineers will use their expertise to consult with clients to protect their facilities against mechanical and electrical breakdowns, fire, and many other hazards. This could include conducting in-depth risk assessments of key equipment, such as turbines, generators, large motors and transformers, black liquor recovery boilers, paper machines, Yankee dryers, pulp dryers, and digesters. As a boiler and machinery consultant engineer, you will develop strong client relationships to advise on risks associated with client businesses as well as develop and implement long-term and short-term risk improvement strategies.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Evaluate the integrity and reliability of equipment, identify hazards and deficiencies to deliver focused risk improvement solutions and reduce equipment risk.
  • Utilize operating standards, data sheets and industry guides such as API, ASME, IEEE, NETA, TAPPI, BLRBAC, etc. to provide risk guidance and implement best practices.
  • Prepare engineering reports with loss expectancies to support risk improvement.
  • Collaborate with Operations Engineering, Client Services, Account Management and Underwriting on Boiler & Machinery recommendations.
  • Engineers will work from a home office, must be able to manage their time and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • This is a field-based role and will require travel to large, complex industrial client sites to evaluate the operations and systems of the site and identify risks and hazards. Expected overnight travel is 30%-40%.

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in mechanical, chemical, or electrical engineering
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of industry experience is preferred (chemical or power generation industries are preferred).
  • US Nany Nuclear power, merchant marine, or power generation experience preferred.
  • Experience as an operator, reliability engineer, etc. with an understanding of system inter-relationships.
  • Knowledge of electrical and/or mechanical equipment and systems such as rotating equipment, boilers, generators, system interrelationships and knowledge of safety devices.
  • Ability to enter confined spaces.
  • An eagerness to learn across a broad range of industries and types of hazards. 
  • Good analytical, organizational, problem solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Independent and focused within a home office environment, with strong planning and time management skills with minimal supervision.
  • Results driven and self-motivated are a must.
  • Solid technical aptitude including diverse knowledge of engineering principles
  • Strong verbal and written English communications skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office products.
  • Physically able to lift 25 pounds, able to climb ladders, and experience heights.
  • Authorization to work in the US.
  • Valid driver’s license.

The final salary offer will vary based on individual education, skills, and experience.
